Integral Buddhism – Developing All Aspects of One’s Personhood

“With the Integral approach to Buddhist practice, it includes opportunities to look into our lives in many different ways: dimensionally from a psychological point of view, a philosophical point of view, an ethical point of view, in terms of physical health and well-being… all the different aspects of human knowledge, of human pursuits, need to become integrated with one’s personal path. This is what is meant by “integral” in this context.”
— Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX

Buddhism is often understood in a limited way — as a philosophy, a meditation method, or a religious tradition. However, Buddhism is not just one thing, but an integrated system that addresses all aspects of human experience: our thoughts, emotions, ethics, and well-being.

This Meditation and Teaching Series focuses on video teachings by Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX on Integral Buddhism, presenting a comprehensive approach that incorporates philosophy, psychology, ethics, meditation, and physical well-being. Rinpoche teaches that genuine transformation arises not from focusing on one aspect or approach alone, but through engaging integrated practices that include all aspects of our being—body, speech, and mind—allowing us to cultivate strength, fortitude, and a transformation that permeates all areas of one’s life.

Part 1: Understanding the Integral Buddhist View and Its Approach to Suffering
Sunday 13th April

Part 1 introduces Integral Buddhism as a holistic system, moving beyond the idea of Buddhism as just meditation, philosophy, or religion. It emphasizes the interconnection between mind, ethics, and well-being, showing how Buddhist practice provides practical methods for understanding suffering and developing resilience, fortitude, and courage. Rather than avoiding difficulties, this approach helps transform how we engage with challenges, enabling greater clarity and strength in daily life.

The course further explores:

  • Understanding Suffering and Its Causes – Examining how craving, self-identity, and perception shape our experience, recognizing that while some pain is unavoidable, suffering arises from how we engage with it.
  • The Mind’s Role in Transformation – How habitual thought patterns and emotions shape experience, and how Buddhist practice provides tools to shift perception and behavior, not just through mental reflection but through ethical conduct and action.
  • Developing Resilience, Fortitude, and Courage – How engaging with suffering skillfully, rather than avoiding it, strengthens our ability to navigate difficulties with clarity and confidence.

Part 2: Wisdom in Action—Bringing Buddhist Philosophy and Ethics to Life
Sunday 11th May

Part 2 explores how Buddhist philosophy is not just a conceptual framework but a method for transforming perception, speech, and action, leading to direct engagement with suffering and its causes.

Explores:

  • The Noble Eightfold Path – More than just a guide for ethical living, this is a method for integrating wisdom, ethical conduct, and meditative practice into daily life.
  • Understanding the Mind through Abhidharma – Insights into how habitual tendencies condition our experience and how reconditioning body, speech, and mind forms the basis for genuine transformation.
  • Madhyamaka and Emptiness – Examining how grasping to fixed identities and mistaken perceptions creates suffering, and how Madhyamaka dissolves these fixations to cultivate a more open and flexible way of engaging with reality.

Part 3: Mind & Body, The Power of the Breath and The Six Transcendental Actions
Sunday 15th June

Part 3 examines the relationship between wisdom, compassion, and physical well-being, emphasizing the holistic nature of transformation.

Explores:

  • The Six Paramitas – Developing generosity, ethical discipline, patience, diligence, meditative concentration, and wisdom as essential qualities that sustain both personal growth and the ability to benefit others.
  • Breath and Energy in Practice – Understanding how breath regulation supports mental clarity, emotional balance, and the integration of meditative practice rather than being a standalone technique.
  • The Mind-Body Connection – Examining how Tibetan Medicine sees the mind and body as an interdependent system, where mental habits influence physical health and vice versa, providing a framework for overall well-being.
