Towards The Psychology Of Buddhism: Meditation & Emotions

June 14 @ 7:30 pm - June 15 @ 4:30 pm

Meditation And Teachings Series:
Towards The Psychology of Buddhism

Meditation & Emotions

The evening of the 14th at 7:30pm & 15th June 9am – 4:30pm

Continuing our 2024 series on Towards the Psychology of Buddhism, in this set of audio teachings, Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX challenges the idea that meditation involves simply “working with the mind” as if this is all that is required to overcome negative and painful emotional state.

We may think of meditation practice as a way to cultivate mindfulness, awareness, and greater concentration,

and if we do that, we will automatically overcome negative states of mind.

This is only partly true.

We may believe doing these meditational practices will diminish the power of the negative emotions

and that they will have less hold over us until they eventually disappear.

While that is emphasized in Buddhist practice,

it is done in a context of having gained some understanding of the mind and how it works

—that is, the understanding of the psychology of meditation presented in the Abhidharma literature

– Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX

Within the vast teachings on Buddhist psychology, known as the Abhidharma, the relationship of mental and emotional states is detailed, providing important insight into how our ‘ordinary’ psychological experiences arise.

Drawing from these essential teachings, Traleg Rinpoche IX explores this important intersection between meditation and emotions and explores how gaining clarity on the mental events that drive our experiences, we are afforded the opportunity to consciously shape our character.
