E-Vam Institute is very proud to present Ekai Korematsu Roshi. Continuing the annual tradition as requested by Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX, Ekai Roshi will teach “On Expressing One’s True Nature by Expressing One’s Intent” (Sesshin Sesshō), text from the Shobegenzo by Zen Master Dōgen.

On Expressing One’s True Nature through Expressing One’s Intent

説心 説性 (Sesshin Sessho)

Zen Master Dogen once remarked, “While putting it into practice, hitting the bull’s-eye even once in a hundred attempts may elude you. However, in the end, you will inevitably reach the target. This achievement may come from heeding the guidance of a spiritual companion or from following Scriptural texts. The success you experience today is the culmination of a hundred previous failures. It represents the fulfillment of those hundred misses.”

Dogen emphasizes the importance of not misinterpreting the term Sesshin as merely “expressing one’s mind,” particularly if we view “expressing” as engaging in intellectual discussions about the nature of the mind. Instead, Sessho, which conveys the meaning of “expressing one’s intent,” specifically refers to actively manifesting one’s spiritual intention to assist all sentient beings in reaching the Other Shore.

In Shobogenzo, Sesshin Sessho, Ekai Korematsu Roshi delves into Zen Master Dogen’s perspective on practice and realization within the four sessions.
